KDE Community Ships Fourth Translation and Service Release of the 4.0 Free Desktop, Containing Numerous Bugfixes, Performance Improvements and Translation Updates
Nokia wants to build its edge through cross-platform software, and has done a deal to acquire Trolltech (via Engadget).
I have known Trolltech as the company behind the excellent Qt toolkit which powers my favorite desktop environment KDE. But it also has its counterpart for the mobile world - Qtopia. Trolltech has gone ahead and used this to build Greenphone, a Linux mobile development device. I am sure Nokia will like to take advantage of integration of these technologies.
In a press release today Trolltech, the creators of the QT GUI toolkit, announced that Nokia will be acquiring Trolltech to accelerate it’s software strategy.
From the press release: “Nokia intends to continue to enhance Trolltech products through active and ongoing development, for both desktop and mobile. To further stimulate industry innovation based on Trolltech’s products, Nokia plans to continue to license Trolltech technology under both commercial and open source licenses.”

Here is a list of potential risks in the RIA approach. Yes it is only risks, not rewards though the title say about rewards too.

Trolltech has adopted GPLv3 for cross-platform open source application development toolkit Qt. It is important to note that this is an addition to its availability under GPLv2, meaning it will be available under both licenses. This indicates that even KDE might go GPLv3 in its further releases. GPLv3 raised fair amount of controversy over enforcing releasing the source code. GPLv2 seems to be still more popular, however, toolkits adopting v3 might make it more popular amongst the developers.
