New York Stock Exchange Runs Trades On Red Hat Linux

The New York Stock Exchange and its European subsidiary exchanges are running their trading systems on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat announced Wednesday, as it unveiled a new marquee customer.

Linux has been known to be in use at several New York financial services firms, but few have stepped up to the podium to testify on the value of their implementations. As a result of mergers and acquisitions, the New York Stock Exchange has migrated over the last few years from HP-UX to IBM AIX to Sun Solaris to Linux. NYSE Group CIO Steve Rubinow said the conversion to Linux followed the acquisition of the Euronext exchange in 2007. Unlike some trading companies that suggest Linux is running their secondary systems, Rubinow emphasized that Linux is running the NYSE's mission-critical trading systems.

Microsoft scrambles to counter the rise of OpenSource Linux on ULPCs

It seems that Asus' Eee PC masterstroke took more than rival laptop manufacturers by surprise. Microsoft has been caught off guard by the sudden popularity of the cheap, diminutive devices and doesn't like the fact that OpenSource Linux Operating Systems are benefiting the most from it.

However, IDG News Service reports that Microsoft has a few teeny tiny concessions it wants manufacturers to make in return for its enormous generosity: the machine specs have to be kept very low. The screen must be 10.2" or less, it is allowed no more than 1GB of RAM and a single-core processor of 1GHz or less, 80GB is the maximum hard disc space and absolutely no touch screens either. Wouldn't want these eating into that huge Origami market now - HAHAHAHAHA.

Windows is caught between Mac and Linux

For the first time in ages, the sale of new PCs with Windows as a percentage of the PC market is declining sharply. The new winner is the Mac, but, while no one does a good job of tracking the still-new, pre-installed Linux desktop market, it's also clear that Linux is finally making impressive inroads into Windows' once unchallenged market share.

Linux Graphics Users.com

About Linux Graphics Users.com

Linux Graphics Users.com is a forum created by artists, for artists in the Linux community. It is true, that most of the Linux graphics software listed on our site has their own forums (some more than one).... But, LGU is much more than just about the software, or the distro.... It's about the people. People like you and me who just wanna talk about art & design, and share advice, tips & tricks, tutorials to help others, etc. without having to talk about which distro they use... or this one is better than that one. There are more than enough of those places on the web for that... this is about art, and people who are interested in art, and anything related to it from basic wallpapers.... to designing / creating entire window decorator themes, icons, bootsplashes, photography, printing, etc.
We will also be including discussions on Linux in the world of art & entertainment, as well as in-depth discussions about Linux Graphics Software / Applications

Warning: Hardy Heron May Cause Linux Addiction

"I think the part that's surprised me the most about their work is that they manage to do most of it without bastardizing the system and making things less flexible," Gerhard Mack, a Montreal-based consultant and Slashdot blogger, told LinuxInsider. "Quite often when Linux distros have gone for ease of configuration, you lose the ability to edit config files by hand. With Ubuntu, they seem to make sure users can hand-edit if they want.

"I've been watching Linux distros leapfrog each other for the past decade, and it's been fascinating how far things have come in that time," Mack added. "Things have gone from needing a very advanced user to get an install to where most distros are on par with Windows -- and some are easier to install."
