Be a Productive Linux User

Use Terminator: Terminator is a nice way to free your valuable screen space from multiple terminal windows. Instead of using one terminal window for each task, divide an existing window horizontally or vertically each time you need a new terminal window. So if you find yourself using 8 terminal windows, you can use Terminator and pack your terminals into 2 windows.

Objectify: Overview

This is part of a series of articles from J. Scott Edwards about his pet project Objectify. – Editor History Right after Y2K I decided to resurrect a project I had started in the late ’70s to write an operating system. I started a project called EasyOS (1) on SourceForge to develop an OS based upon the best parts of Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, etc. After toying around for a while I decided that part of the problem was that current operating systems are basically the same as the operating systems I had worked with in the 1970s, with the addition of a GUI. One example would be that all data is stored in files.

Linux Myths: Busted!

One of the main reasons that most people are afraid to try Linux is because they have this preconceived notion about linux being too hard to use and difficult to maintain; or that they have to do something drastically differ ant and there is a steep learning curve to using linux. After reading most of the comment on this post of mine and other popular forums for new linux users, it only solidified my belief that most non-linux users are very ignorant about linux. So here is an attemp to dispel some of the myths surrounding Linux: Myth# 1: Linux Installation is difficult.

Adrian Lamo Doesn’t Like His Picture.

I host most of my pictures I use on this site on flikr, as I was browsing my top pictures list for the first time, I saw a comments on a picture of Adrian Lamo by the man himself. I used this picture on an article I did about a year ago on “Top 10 Black Hat Hackers“. Seems like Adrian is not a big fan of this picture of his, as he writes “If I could make this photograph unexist, I would.” Who is Adrian Lamo? From wikipedia:

7 Uses of GParted Live

Click image for larger view I’ve been using GNU Parted to slice and dice my disk in preference to the fdisk for almost as long as I’ve been using Linux. We all fill up our hard-drives from time to time, but thanks to Gnome GParted, rearranging disk partitions isn’t as terrifying as it used to be. In fact, armed with a GParted Live CD, there’s a swathe of disk space fiddling jobs I can tackle without gnawing my fingers to the bone:

Women in Linux

Women in Linux (or technology in general) has always been a rare breed. I have been very unsuccessful trying to make my female friends or family members getting interested in linux. So in my quest in getting more women interested in linux I have made this list of women who have actively contributed in linux community. This list doesn’t include women in just open source community (like Mitchell Baker of Mozilla Foundation) but more specifically women with notable contribution in linux community. This list is in no particular order.

Whats your broadband speed?

I usually get this question about the varying Broadband speed from many of my readers. The usual question goes like this I am on a 512 kbps unlimited plan but still my download speed is not more than 64kbps :( . Do you have any clues. Is my ISP cheating? Where can i measure my actual broadband speed? So here you go, The first thing to remember is that most of the ISP’s sell the speed as upto speed and not a guaranteed speed. Also, upto speed usually is not the speed we get most of the times. In such scenarios if you really wish to test your current internet speed, Speedtest.net is for you.
