This summer Tara Hunt of HorsePigCow interviewed Jonathan Coulton. As a fan of both, I downloaded the podcast for later listening and then forgot all about. Finally got around to that “to listen to later” folder this morning, and would encourage you to check it out. If you’re not familiar with Coulton, two quick gems. First, Code Monkey:

Blend Interactive featured in eZ Publish magazine

I have to admit that when someone submits a story and I trust them...I sometimes don't read the whole article before I publish it.  So until I read Dean Barker's Gadgetopia, I didn't realize his company, Blend Interactive, was featured in eZ's SHARE! magazine.  The irony is that if I had read an article posted at my own site by one of eZ System's own people...Dean's post wouldn't have been new news to me.  Sigh, I have been just too busy...

Bruce Schneier on fighting security FUD

Further to the coverage of Bruce Schneier's keynote at linux.conf.au in Melbourne, Australia this week, Schneier sat down with iTnews for this interview where he discusses how the computer security industry must not ignore the impact of fear and other emotions on individual and organisational behaviour. From the interview: "I can't tell you how much information about security breaches goes undisclosed — often victims don't even know they've been breached. You can call Gartner and they'll give you a number, but it's meaningless. We live in a capitalist society and you can't ask companies to voluntarily do things which are against their interests for the greater good. If they did, their shareholders would sack them."

5 Software Developer Competencies ( How to Recognize a Good Programmer)

Slashdot (as is often the case these days) had a very funny but not very helpful thread, How to Recognize a Good Programmer, reacting to Daniel's Inter-Sections blog post of the same name which suggested that the key qualities are Passion, Love of learning, Intelligence, Hidden Experience and Variety of technologies. While I see some value in each of those, I think Daniel is looking for a geek programmer rather than a good programmer. I define a geek programmer as someone who loves it so much, they do a lot of it on their own time.
