What's in a .name?

I've had http://michellecox.name for a while but never knew what to do with it. I don't need another place to blog as I barely (read: really don't) keep up with the places I already have to blog. I already have a family website so it wasn't useful for that, either. I bought it on a whim and was debating just dropping it again when it expired. read more

Advanced Forum road map

Issue queues are great for keeping track of individual issues but I find it handy to summarize everything into one document to be able to see the big picture. This post will, of course, get out of date quickly, but I'll revise it from time to time. The current revision was done on August 10, 2008. D5 bugs: D6 bugs: read more

12,000 fish in danger

This has nothing to do with Drupal but I'm trying to help get the word out. Kelly, a member of a Wisconsin forum I'm on runs a fish rescue / breeding business. She ran into bad luck with a scamming contractor and now the electric company is going to shut off her power in 2 days. The 12,000 fish she is currently caring for will all die when this happens. read more

Giving Mollom a try

About a week before Drupalcon, I was deleting a spam comment on groups.drupal.org and noticed it wanted me to report it to something called "Mollom". Suspecting this was the secret new anti spam program I'd been hearing rumors about for months, I did a search and found the beta site. The site was open to the public, said it was running a public beta, and had all the steps to get started. read more

Introducing Advanced Profile

The third incarnation of my user profiles tutorial, this time in module form, has arrived. I'd like to introduce the Advanced Profile module. It still needs work and isn't feature complete, but it's a good start and available to play around with.

A better way to select taxonomy terms

When building a business directory that will have non-admins adding entries and selecting categories, you need to make it as easy as possible. By default, Drupal offers up a multi select box to scroll through possibly hundreds of terms and control-click the categories you want your entry to be in. Definitely not user friendly. read more

Introducing Advanced Forum

A little over a month ago, I decided to improve the look of the forums on this site. I had customized flatforum for my Coulee Region community forums and figured I'd just copy it over here and tweak it a bit. Well, I'd forgotten what a mess I had to integrate flatforum into my site and get it looking decent. I figured if I was going to try and rip that all out I might as well straighten it up while I was at it. So, rather out of the blue, I suddenly found myself creating a forum enhancement module.

Why not install profiles?

I've been asked a few times to make an install profile out of my user profiles and now I'm running into it again with my work on forums. There's also been a lot of talk lately about why more people aren't doing them. I've thought about it, and haven't ruled it out completely, but I'm thinking I probably won't. Why not? Simply this: install profiles assume you are doing a fresh install and that limits their usefulness. read more

Print "Hello World!";

Well, this isn't exactly node/1 but it is my first "blog" post. I decided I wanted a place to put things I write that are more opinions and thoughts and less tutorial-y. So I made a blog. I'm not using the blog module because having "Michelle's blog" on all the posts seemed kind of silly. CCK and views works better for a single person blog. read more
