What vendors really mean by 'open source'

When you say 'open source', you may be clear about what you mean. However, others are twisting the term for their own ends, says open-source expert Mark Taylor. Like me, you've probably read articles on how free software, or open source, is going to thrive in 2009, and how businesses everywhere are going to survive the recession by migrating to it. Perhaps you agree with those views; perha [...]

Sun shows Cloud Computing a Silver Lining

After evaluating Microsoft's cloud offering and Windows Azure, I was curious to know what network.com running Sun Grid will look like. The current goal is to make it suitable for building background tasks that present no web UI, but within that constraint, it's remarkably flexible. Theoretically any program capable of running on Solaris 10 for X64 (AMD or Intel CPU) can become a Sun Grid application! There are of course some constraints:

Windows Azure - Cloud Computing or Blue Sky thinking?

Microsoft has entered the world of cloud computing with Windows Azure; is it real, or is it the result of breathing a rarified atmosphere for too long? I'm going to give you the nuts and bolts of what's in the material released so far. First, a little history - when Windows Vista was released, Microsoft cloud computing meant having something like this as your desktop background: Now Microsoft's cloud computing service consists of an announcement, several web pages (including the option to register for the trial) and, yes, a whitepaper.

Yahoo!'s Zimbra Takes Educators Into the Cloud

Following this week's Windows Azure announcement by Microsoft, the ball was in the competition's court. And Yahoo! responded with a cloud-related announcement of its own. Yahoo! announced that it will offer the Zimbra Collaboration Suite as a hosted solution for educational institutions. According to Zimbra, over 500 schools are already using Zimbra. This hosted solution is currently available exclusively to .edu's. Who knows -- maybe, if all goes well, the solution will expand its wings beyond the .edu market.

Kevin Kelly: Evidence of a Global SuperOrganism

Haven’t read the whole article yet, but good stuff so far: I am not the first, nor the only one, to believe a superorganism is emerging from the cloak of wires, radio waves, and electronic nodes wrapping the surface of our planet. No one can dispute the scale or reality of this vast connectivity. What’s uncertain is, what is it? Is this global web of computers, servers and trunk lines a mere mechanical circuit, a very large tool, or does it reach a threshold where something, well, different happens?

Why Web Startups Work Better as Divisions of Larger Companies.

Whatever 'Web 2.0' is or was, few organizations have lived and breathed the term as much as Zoho. Bringing office applications into the cloud for commercial and personal use is the most obvious example of this, but equally notable is all the hidden strategic and operational stuff which has brought Zoho, as of last week, to the landmark figure of one million users.
