WebEx Comes to iPhone

Web-based meetings are certainly nothing new. The problem with web meetings is, despite the convenience of being able to meet with others a world away, you are still tied to your office usually. With WebEx for iPhone you no longer need to stay late on a Friday for a meeting you can attend from the golf course or the comfort of your home.

GPL Violations: Is Cisco the Big One?

Many sceptics were convinced that as free software spread out beyond hackers into the general computing sector the rigorous GNU GPL licence would gradually be replaced by more accommodating – meaning weaker – forms, since it was “obvious” that its unbending rules were too strict for widespread use. In fact, the GPL has grown in importance, until today it is probably fair to say that it underpins most of the free software world, including enterprise applications. This makes any violation of its terms particularly worrying, because if left unchallenged, it threatens to undermine the entire ecosystem. On Linux Journal.

Wanted Dead [not alive] M$ Unified Communications. $100k Reward

I used to work in the Computer Networking Industry and Cisco was, by far, my biggest competitor in almost all areas. You had to respect them however. Not only did they have a very full war chest of products, sales execs and money to pour into the channel but also they were the absolute best for the way they managed acquisitions (and they did a lot of them). They had such a thorough and well-honed process that the acquired companies almost always integrated swiftly and with minimal pain. Those individuals who stayed were made welcome on Day 1. And those who were not wanted were given their severance fairly and swiftly.

Cisco and WebEx Bring New Enterprise Platform

When Cisco acquired WebEx, the technology world waited in anticipation for what the combined company would bring to market. Cisco answered back recently by releasing a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) communications platform that brings users a combined presence, instant messaging, Web meeting and team space for workplace collaboration. The company aims to offer an attractive set of communication tools that will deter enterprise users from looking for external options that are outside organizations' firewalls.

Cisco Reduces Messaging to Just Jabber

Cisco today announced its intent to acquire privately held Jabber, Inc., a provider of presence and messaging software. Based in Denver, Jabber will work with Cisco to enhance the existing presence and messaging functions of Cisco's Collaboration portfolio. As several have pointed out, open source doesn't really enter into the equation - or even get a mention in the press release. That's not surprising: Cisco neither gets nor cares about free software. For Cisco, this is just some pretty icing, which it will doubtless distribute freely. Everyone else can now forget about making money in messaging.

Fair Queuing For ALTQ

"I have a question for the PF/ALTQ masters out there," Matthew Dillon began on the DragonFlyBSD kernel mailing list, having recently switched from using a Cisco router to a DragonFlySD server running PF. "I am trying to configure PF in a manner similar to what Cisco's fair-queue algorithm does. Cisco's algorithm basically hashes TCP and UDP traffic based on the port/IP pairs, creating a bunch of lists of backlogged packets and then schedules the packets at the head of each list." He went on to explain that he was unsuccessfully trying to configure the same thing with PF, "neither CBQ nor HFSC seem to work well. I can separate certain types of traffic but the real problem is when there are multiple TCP connections that are essentially classified the same, and one is hogging the outgoing bandwidth. So the question is, is there a PF solution for that or do I need to write a new ALTQ mechanic to implement fair queueing?"
