It's been available for two weeks or so now, and the hype has died down a little, but it is still worth mentioning the new animated movie feature, created with open source animation tool Blender - Big Buck Bunny.
This is essentially the follow up production after the quite successful Elephant's Dream last year. Which I must admit to enjoying more than this latest effort.
For more information about Big Buck Bunny, the Peach team or Blender, it's probably easiest to send you on your way with a fine collection of links:
Blender Institute, part of the Blender Foundation, made another animated open content film entitled Big Buck Bunny. The short movie is created using only free and open source software.
"...Big Buck Bunny is a free short movie created by the Peach open movie project. The animated movie is freely licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license, which means, according to their 'about' page: 'you can freely reuse and distribute this content, also commercially, for as long you provide a proper attribution.' Big Buck Bunny was made primarily with the awesome free Blender 3D
The Open Movie Project has released the "Big Buck Bunny'. Be sure to check this out and also to download it. If you can support the future of the project please buy the DVDs.

It’s here! Big Buck Bunny is a free short movie created by the Peach open movie project. The animated movie is freely licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license, which means, according to their “about” page: “you can freely reuse and distribute this content, also commercially, for as long you provide a proper attribution.”
Big Buck Bunny was made primarily with the awesome free Blender 3D graphics software. As far as I know, all the software used was free software, so you can download software and project files all for free and use them however you wish. That’s cool.
As a follow-up to the successful project Orange’s “Elephants Dream”, the Blender Foundation initiated another open movie project. Again a small team (7) of the best 3D artists and developers in the Blender community have been invited to come together to work in Amsterdam from October 2007 until April 2008 on completing a short 3D animation movie. The team members will get a great studio facility and housing in Amsterdam, all travel costs reimbursed, and a fee sufficient to cover all expenses during the period.
The creative concept of “Peach” was completely different as for “Orange”. This time it is “funny and furry”!
The Blender Foundation and Blender community have been the main financiers for Peach. As for the previous open movie, a pre-sale campaign to purchase the DVD set in advance will be organized.
Additional support from sponsors and subsidy funds has been realized as well.
The work of the past half year - also thanks to the open movie project "Big Buck Bunny" - has resulted in a greatly improved feature set, now released as Blender 2.46, the "Bunny release"!
We proudly present a brand new official Blender release, now with hair and fur combing and...
Today the blender.org team announced the official release of version 2.46, codenamed the "Bunny Release". While 2.46 release candidates have been around for a while now, the final product has some exciting changes in the Video Sequencer tool.
These include:
- Strip Blend Modes
- A reworked GUI
- A new consistent input filter
- Three way colour correction
- Proxy file creation and editing support
- Updated Preview
- True NTSC support
- Strip Transform
- Strip Markers
So, quite a lot of quality updates for video editing! Read more about the details here.
I might now need to learn how to use Blender for my video editing needs. A good place to start could be Eugenia's tutorial.
Remember ThinkFree? There are many situations where Microsoft approaches or acquires projects to ensure it can successfully exclude competitors and make third-party software developers (including their end users) more Microsoft-dependent. Watch what Microsoft is up to with Bldender at the moment. Blender is a FOSS poster child.
