Vista was released not long ago, and has been a somewhat unrousing success, mostly due to the many ways that Microsoft counts their market share, and multitude of hostage-like OEM agreements that flood the market with Vista even if nobody seems to really want it.

Now they are already planning to make a follow-on to this unpopular flop, and it’s called Windows 7. ??? I don’t know about you, but to me it seems like Microsoft’s consumer products have had more names than a B-movie method actor trying to get their first big break.
Lets recap the naming cycles of Microsoft Windows consumer products, there’s a trend here, mostly that when Microsoft can’t predict what year an OS will come out, they revert to Proper Nouns in the naming scheme:
- Windows 1.0
- Windows 2.0
- Windows/286
- Windows/386
- Windows 3.0
- Windows 3.1
- Windows For Workgroups
- Windows 95
- Windows 95b
- Windows 98
- Windows XP
- Windows Vista *
- Windows 7
Wow, they’re all over the map with the naming thing. I predict that Microsoft will begin to name their consumer versions after the children of various marketing department personnel, that being about as consistent as the previous naming conventions:
- Windows Fred
- Windows Kelli
- Windows Brooke
Yeah, I know, it’s pretty silly, but for heaven’s sake, they’re starting to plan to reproduce another version of Windows and foist it on the consumer market, can’t they at least consider dropping the whole thing and either coming out with
Microsoft Linux or
something totally new?
We’ll see, and who knows, it might be another 5 years before we see the release of the next version, ala Vista…
