"....here’s what gives me pause about XP coming to the XO: There’s no way Linux will get an equal shake on OLPC’s XO. In fact, I reckon that more XO units will ship with XP than Linux in the not too distant future. Why? Governments are making the buying decisions. Not kids."

Source: CivicActions blogsI have created a new page on my website. For lack of a better name, I have called the page "Interesting Stuff Elsewhere". The page features a list of links to "stuff" which I have deemed interesting enough to share via my Google Reader account.
The "stuff" is a hodgepodge collection of articles, blog posts, podcasts and videos; having said that, the "stuff" could be anything and the only real way to find out what the "stuff" is, is to click on the links. One thing is for sure, all the links lead to dead good "stuff" :)

Continuing the thread with Simon Wardley, I want to lay out a couple thoughts that Simon’s reply has prompted me to finally put into writing. This is one of two.
In a comment reply, Simon Wardley points out that the aforementioned “SaaS Loophole” is actually a good thing. I agree. To put a finer point on it, one could make a great case that without SaaS Loophole, excellent web search results (Google) and thousands of other freely-available services on the web would have been much longer in coming around. Much of what we love about the Internet today was created by companies that used Free Software as a platform for innovation and a springboard to building a business.

In Simon’s reply to my comments, he states:
However ‘Affero’ enforced that changes are to be released back and this could possibly discourage use. It could also discourage companies creating operational improvements to the system, i.e. keeping to the primitives of the platform but improving the code efficiency.

A new version of Mumble, the open source, low-latency, high-quality voice communication tool for gamers has been released.
Mumble includes game linking, so voice from other players comes from the direction of their characters in-game, and has echo cancellation so the sound from your loudspeakers wont be audible to other players.
The official release notes:

The clear glass front of the store stands in stark contrast to Apple's
unethical business practices, including using opaque Digital Restrictions

I don't claim to follow the detailed ins and outs of this story about the release of the Italian electronic identity cards specs, but the conclusions seems clear enough:
So what will the gained freedom bring us and the citizens who have an Italian eID in their pockets? Here is my take on foreseeing the future: In a relatively short time, support for the Italian eID card will be added to OpenSC and thus provide multi-platform middleware for Firefox browers, for Virtual Private Networks and Secure Shell, and for other applications. Also commercial players will be able to support the eID in their operating systems, or on their devices (e.g., set top boxes).
Learning Drupal 6 Module Development is a new book from Packt, which acts
as a practical tutorial for creating Drupal 6 modules with PHP. Written by Matt
Butcher, this book will help users to walk through the development of complete
Drupal 6 Modules.
Drupal is a free and open-source modular web
application framework and content management system (CMS) written in PHP. It
can run in many environments, including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and FreeBSD.
It's a modular system, with an elegant hook-based architecture, and great code.
These are a few of the perks that make Drupal a choice platform for developers
who want the power of an established CMS, but the freedom to make it work for
them. From social networking to AJAX to e-commerce, the hundreds of existing
modules attest to Drupal's flexibility.

Even better, you don't need Linux installed to create it, you can leave the data on your thumb drive untouched, and any files you create or settings you tweak remain in place the next time you boot up.
